I could not see the wharf and buildings through the darkness and the smoke drifting across the sea, and could barely distinguish the dim lights at the post, two of which were red.

The horrifying scene was compounded of darkness, silhouettes of mountains,
and beyond the mountains, a red glow which rose to the sky, from remote fires.
It seemed that all Sakhalin was in flames.
